Korean Cushion Foundation: Why Korea Still Loves It

One product format has survived years of changing Korean beauty trends: the Korean cushion foundation.

Lip makeup moves between matte and glossy. Base trends shift from luminous skin to softer semi-matte finishes. Skincare ingredients move in and out of the spotlight. Yet the cushion remains an established part of Korea’s base-makeup market.

The reason is more interesting than convenience alone.

Why is cushion foundation still important in Korea, and what should you know before buying one?

The Short Answer

A Korean cushion foundation is liquid base makeup delivered through a compact, usually with a sponge or mesh reservoir and an applicator puff.

But “cushion” does not describe one specific finish or coverage level. Korea now has glow cushions, matte cushions, natural-finish cushions, higher-coverage formulas and skincare-inspired cushions at very different price points.

The format also continues to appear as its own competitive category in major Korean retail data. In the 2025 Olive Young Awards, JUNG SAEM MOOL Essential Skin Nuder Cushion ranked No. 1 in the cushion category for the third consecutive year.

That makes the more useful question not whether Koreans still buy cushions, but which type of cushion fits your needs.

What Is a Cushion Foundation?

In Korean, cushion is written:

쿠션 — kusyeon

You may also see:

쿠션 파운데이션 — kusyeon paundeisyeon — cushion foundation

Instead of dispensing liquid foundation from a bottle or tube, a cushion compact stores the formula inside an internal reservoir. You press the included puff onto the product and tap the formula onto the skin.

The format is important, but it should not be confused with the formula itself.

A cushion can be sheer or relatively high coverage. It can be dewy, natural, semi-matte or matte.

You may also encounter names such as:

  • mesh cushion
  • glow cushion
  • serum cushion
  • ampoule cushion
  • BB cushion

Those labels can describe the delivery system, finish or marketing concept. They do not automatically create completely separate cosmetic categories.

A “serum cushion,” for example, is still makeup even if the formula contains ingredients or marketing language associated with skincare.

That distinction has become more important as Korean makeup increasingly borrows concepts such as serum, ampoule, moisture and glow from skincare.

This broader crossover is also visible in Korea’s current beauty market. In my guide to what a Korean skincare routine actually looks like in 2026, I looked at Korean beauty-platform data showing an increase in hybrid makeup products using skincare-related terms.

Cushion foundation fits naturally into that shift.

The 2025 Olive Young Awards Give Us Better Evidence Than Hype

One problem with discussing K-beauty internationally is that a product can remain famous overseas long after the Korean market has changed.

That is why Korean retail data matters.

According to CJ Olive Young’s official 2025 Olive Young Awards announcement, the retailer analyzed approximately 180 million customer purchase records from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.

The awards selected 166 K-beauty and wellness products across 40 categories.

Cushion was one of those categories.

The No. 1 product was:

JUNG SAEM MOOL Essential Skin Nuder Cushion.

More importantly, this was not a one-year result.

The product ranked No. 1 in Olive Young’s cushion category in 2023, 2024 and 2025, according to Korean industry coverage of the JUNG SAEM MOOL three-year Olive Young Awards result.

That is a stronger signal of sustained Korean retail performance than one viral video, one temporary bestseller chart or an overseas marketplace badge.

But it still needs to be interpreted carefully.

No. 1 Does Not Mean “Best for Everyone”

A retail ranking answers a specific question.

It does not answer every question.

JUNG SAEM MOOL ranking No. 1 does not prove that it is objectively the best cushion for every skin type, complexion or makeup preference.

Olive Young’s awards draw on customer purchase data and category trends. That makes them useful evidence of retail performance.

It does not turn them into a universal product test.

The same distinction applies to Olive Young’s ordinary bestseller rankings.

As I explained in Olive Young Best Sellers: What the Korean Ranking Actually Measures, a ranked listing may be a refill set, double set, oversized package or other promotional configuration rather than one ordinary product.

The sales are real.

But the offer surrounding the formula can also influence what consumers buy.

That is why I use Korean rankings as evidence of market position, not as proof that every shopper should choose the No. 1 product.

What JUNG SAEM MOOL’s Success Tells Us

The long-running performance of Essential Skin Nuder Cushion is useful because the product is not built around an extreme base-makeup effect.

Olive Young Global describes the Essential Skin Nuder Cushion as a radiant cushion designed to provide transparent, natural-looking coverage.

That gives us one clue about the Korean cushion market:

A successful cushion does not have to look obviously like foundation.

There is also an important shade-range story here.

The standard version currently listed by Olive Young Global describes 10 Nuder shades. But international shoppers may encounter another version entirely.

Olive Young Global also lists a separate 30-shade Essential Skin Nuder Cushion, with shades extending from 10N Shell Cream through 45N Espresso.

That is an unusually broad range compared with the limited shade selection historically associated with Korean cushion makeup.

It also illustrates why you should check the exact listing being sold in your market instead of assuming that every version of a Korean cushion has the same shade range.

The product name alone may not tell you which configuration you are looking at.

Cushion vs. Foundation: What Is the Difference?

A common explanation goes like this:

Cushion = light coverage

Foundation = heavy coverage

That is too simple.

A cushion primarily describes the delivery format.

The formula inside can still vary significantly.

Some cushions provide sheer coverage.

Others are designed to cover considerably more.

Some leave a noticeable glow.

Others are matte.

Some are thin and flexible.

Others can build into a more perfected base.

Bottled foundations vary in exactly the same way.

So a better framework is:

Cushion = compact application system

Then evaluate the individual product for:

  • finish
  • coverage
  • texture
  • shade range
  • wear
  • price
  • refill availability

This prevents the packaging from telling you more about the formula than it actually can.

Why the Puff Changes the Application

The included puff is one reason cushion makeup feels different from simply carrying liquid foundation in a smaller container.

Cushion puffs are generally designed for pressing and tapping rather than rubbing foundation across the face.

That makes it relatively easy to apply small amounts in layers.

You can use less product where you want skin to remain visible and build more around areas where you want additional coverage.

The opposite approach can create problems.

Pressing deeply into the cushion and saturating the puff does not necessarily create a better finish. Too much product at once can make the base appear heavier or collect around visible texture.

With many cushions, starting with a small amount and building gradually is the more controllable approach.

Glow, Matte or Natural?

This is one of the most useful ways to begin shopping for a Korean cushion.

Start with the finish rather than the viral brand.

Glow Cushions

Glow cushions are designed to leave visible luminosity on the skin.

In Korean beauty descriptions, you may encounter terms such as:

광 — gwang — glow or radiance

윤광 — yungwang — luminous sheen

촉촉 — chokchok — moist or hydrating-feeling

These terms are not perfect synonyms, but they generally point away from a dry, flat matte finish.

Glow cushions also fit into a larger Korean beauty trend: the increasing overlap between skincare language and makeup.

Serum, moisture, hyaluronic acid, ampoule and glow are increasingly familiar concepts in base-makeup positioning.

That does not mean the makeup has become skincare.

It means consumers are being offered makeup with skincare-associated ingredients, textures or sensory claims.

Matte Cushions

Matte and semi-matte cushions are designed to control visible shine and create a less luminous finish.

They may appeal to shoppers who dislike a very dewy base or prefer makeup that looks more controlled through the day.

But “matte” does not automatically mean “for oily skin,” just as “glow” does not automatically mean “for dry skin.”

Your sunscreen, skincare underneath, climate, application amount and other makeup can all change the final result.

Natural and Satin Cushions

Between glow and matte sits a large middle ground.

These cushions aim for skin that looks neither obviously wet nor heavily powdered.

This helps explain why natural-looking base products can remain relevant while specific makeup trends move back and forth.

The cushion does not necessarily need to be the most visible part of the makeup.

Sometimes its job is simply to make the complexion look more even.

There Is No Single “Korean Cushion Look”

International K-beauty imagery can make cushion foundation look like one category:

pale, extremely dewy skin in a compact.

The real category is broader.

Korean beauty retailers carry cushions positioned around natural radiance, matte finishes, higher coverage, skincare-inspired textures and different price points.

So Korean consumers are not simply choosing:

cushion or foundation.

They can choose among many different types of cushion.

That distinction also fits a larger change in Korean beauty retail.

As I explained in MUSINSA Beauty vs Olive Young: Where Should You Shop in Korea?, Korea’s beauty market is increasingly spread across retailers with different identities and different approaches to makeup, skincare, fragrance and brand discovery.

One retailer’s shelf should not be treated as the entire Korean market.

The same rule applies to one bestselling cushion.

The Biggest Issue for International Shoppers: Shade Range

Before looking at rankings, check whether the product comes in a realistic shade for you.

Korean base makeup has traditionally used numbers such as:

17

21

23

You may also see numbers including 19, 22, 25 and others, often combined with undertone descriptions.

But these numbers are not a universal standard.

Shade 21 from one Korean brand does not have to match shade 21 from another brand.

The same number can differ in:

  • depth
  • undertone
  • saturation
  • brightness

That makes blind shade-number shopping risky.

Instead, check the exact brand’s shade chart and look at both depth and undertone.

JUNG SAEM MOOL also shows why checking the specific listing matters.

Olive Young Global currently carries both a version described with 10 Nuder shades and a separate 30-shade version.

The product name alone does not tell you which shade system you are looking at.

What About SPF in Cushion Foundation?

Many Korean cushions display SPF and PA ratings.

That is useful information, but makeup with SPF should not automatically be treated as a replacement for your normal sunscreen step.

The American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance on skincare application order places moisturizer and/or sunscreen before makeup.

The AAD also recommends choosing a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and applying it before going outdoors. Its guide to applying sunscreen correctly emphasizes that correct application matters for obtaining the intended protection.

That creates a practical problem with relying only on cushion foundation.

The amount of makeup you want for your preferred finish may not correspond to the amount needed for adequate sunscreen application.

A more practical order is:

sunscreen first, makeup second.

Treat the SPF in your cushion as an additional feature rather than assuming a few taps of foundation provide your complete sun-protection routine.

How to Choose a Korean Cushion Foundation

Instead of searching for the single “best Korean cushion,” narrow the decision in this order.

1. Check the Shade Range First

There is little reason to compare formulas if none of the shades match your complexion.

Check depth and undertone before rankings.

2. Choose Your Finish

Decide whether you prefer:

  • glow
  • natural or satin
  • semi-matte
  • matte

This immediately removes many unsuitable options.

3. Decide How Much Coverage You Want

Do you mainly want to even out the complexion?

Or do you want more noticeable coverage?

Do not assume every cushion is sheer.

4. Check What Is Actually Included

Korean beauty retailers frequently sell promotional configurations.

A cushion listing may include:

  • one compact
  • compact + refill
  • extra puff
  • mini cushion
  • limited-edition case
  • promotional gift

For example, the current Korean Olive Young listing for JUNG SAEM MOOL Essential Skin Nuder Cushion includes multiple promotional configurations rather than only one simple standalone SKU.

That matters when comparing prices.

A ₩40,000 cushion containing a refill should not be compared directly with a ₩30,000 single compact without considering what you actually receive.

I found the same problem when comparing Korean and American K-beauty prices in Is K-Beauty Actually Cheaper in Korea? I Compared the Prices.

Korean beauty pricing often makes more sense when you compare the exact quantity and configuration rather than the sticker price alone.

5. Use Rankings as Evidence, Not Instructions

A No. 1 ranking tells you that a product performed strongly in the market being measured.

It does not know your:

  • undertone
  • preferred finish
  • desired coverage
  • climate
  • budget
  • makeup style

Use Korean rankings to discover products.

Then use your own requirements to choose among them.

How Cushions Connect to Korea’s Skincare-Makeup Trend

The modern cushion market also makes more sense when viewed alongside a broader Korean beauty trend.

As discussed in What a Korean Skincare Routine Actually Looks Like in 2026, Korean beauty-platform data has pointed to growth in hybrid makeup products carrying skincare-related terms such as serum, ampoule, glow and hyaluronic acid.

Cushions are a natural place for this crossover.

Base makeup sits directly over skincare and is judged not only by coverage but also by how it spreads, adheres and feels during wear.

That encourages brands to compete on more than pigment.

But the category distinction still matters.

A serum cushion is still makeup.

An ampoule cushion does not replace an ampoule.

And a moisturizing cushion cannot automatically replace a skincare routine suited to your skin.

The more useful conclusion is that the sensory expectations of skincare and makeup are increasingly overlapping.

Is a Korean Cushion Worth Buying in Korea?

It can be — but compare the exact configuration.

Korean retailers frequently use terms such as:

기획 — gihoek — promotional set

리필 — ripil — refill

단독기획 — dandok gihoek — exclusive promotional set

A Korean cushion may therefore look more expensive at first while including a refill, mini or additional product.

An overseas listing may also have a different shade selection or package configuration.

Do not compare two prices until you know whether the listings contain the same amount of product.

This is one of the most important lessons from my K-beauty Korea vs. US price comparison, where Korean double sets and temporary promotions substantially changed the effective price per unit.

The sticker price is only the first number.

FAQ

Are Korean Cushion Foundations Still Popular?

Current Korean retail evidence shows that cushion remains an established makeup category.

Most importantly, JUNG SAEM MOOL Essential Skin Nuder Cushion ranked No. 1 in the Olive Young Awards cushion category for three consecutive years through 2025.

That does not tell us what percentage of Korean consumers personally use cushions.

It does show sustained retail competition around the format.

What Was the No. 1 Cushion in the 2025 Olive Young Awards?

JUNG SAEM MOOL Essential Skin Nuder Cushion ranked No. 1 in the cushion category.

According to Korean industry coverage of the 2025 result, it was the product’s third consecutive year at No. 1.

Is Cushion Foundation Lighter Than Regular Foundation?

Not necessarily.

Cushion primarily describes the compact delivery system. Individual formulas range from sheer to higher coverage and from glow to matte.

Judge the formula, not simply the packaging.

What Korean Cushion Shade Should I Buy?

Do not rely on the shade number alone.

Numbers such as 17, 21 and 23 are commonly used, but they are not perfectly standardized between brands.

Check the shade chart for the exact product and market version you are considering.

Does JUNG SAEM MOOL Have 10 Shades or 30 Shades?

Both numbers currently appear on Olive Young Global depending on the product version.

The standard Essential Skin Nuder Cushion listing describes 10 Nuder shades.

A separate Olive Young Global version is offered in 30 shades.

Always check the exact listing you are buying.

Can Cushion Foundation With SPF Replace Sunscreen?

Do not assume that your normal cushion application provides your complete sun-protection routine.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying sunscreen before makeup, and its sunscreen guidance emphasizes adequate and correct application.

Treat SPF in cushion foundation as an additional feature rather than automatically replacing dedicated sunscreen.

The Bottom Line

Korean cushion foundation is no longer useful to understand as one stereotypical K-beauty product.

It is a format.

Inside that format are glow cushions, natural cushions, matte cushions, different coverage levels, different shade strategies and different price tiers.

The clearest long-term Korean retail signal comes from JUNG SAEM MOOL Essential Skin Nuder Cushion, which ranked No. 1 in the Olive Young Awards cushion category for three consecutive years through 2025.

But that ranking should be the beginning of your research, not the end.

For international shoppers, start with shade match.

Then look at finish, coverage, configuration and price.

That approach tells you much more than simply buying whichever cushion happens to be called Korea’s No. 1.

The cushion has lasted in Korea because it is not one look anymore.

It is an entire way of packaging and applying base makeup.
